Abingdon is a town located south of Oxford City Centre; it is a small market town and civil parish in England. Abingdon is also part of the Vale of The White Horse, and has been the seat there for over 43 years. It is believed to have dated back to the Saxon times, approximately AD 676. Since then, Abingdon has thrived and become a town homing almost 33,000 people. Abingdon, although it may seem small in comparison to Oxford, it is home to many historical features and traditions.
One of Abingdon’s most iconic reasons to visit is the Abingdon Abbey, although only ruins remain, there a parks where once stood the Abbey. It is rich in history and great day out for all of the family. Nearby there is an outdoor pool, sprinklers and an adventure playground. In the summer months this is a perfect destination to bring the kids for a picnic or for a dog friendly walk down the Thames’ banks and across the lock. Once you make your way into the centre of Abingdon there are a range of shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Here, Abingdon is a great place to spend the day wondering around and discovering something new.
In the very centre of Abingdon stands The Abingdon County Hall Museum. This large building has dominated Abingdon since the late 17th century; once a courtroom it now houses a small museum where you can visit and enjoy the views overlooking the market square. Here, there is held a 400 year old tradition: Bun-Throwing. This Bun-Throwing tradition is unique to Abingdon and is taken place to celebrate and mark a royal occasion. The last Bun-Throwing events held were in celebration of the Royal Marriage between Prince William and Kate Middleton in 2011 and the 2012 jubilee. During this celebration councillors climb to the top of the County Hall and through around 4000 current buns down to the crowd. There is a cafe, located behind the Hall named in honour of this celebration – Throwing Buns. This cute, little family run business is a great cafe to grab some homemade cakes or sandwiches.
Another fantastic feature of Abingdon is the river Thames, specifically why Abingdon is often referred to as Abingdon-on-Thames. This river makes a beautiful backdrop in some of Abingdon’s meadows. What’s more, there are a number of pubs and bars that are situated on its banks, such as: The Crown & Thistle, The Kings Head, The Nags Head and many more. These pubs are perfect for those of you who are looking to sit outside and enjoy the sun in the summer months with a spot of pub food and beer.
